“In this country, audiences are somewhat familiar with, let’s say, Moliere or Chekhov, but are still abismally ignorant about the greatness of Spanish classical heritage. Calderón is one of the most important playwrights in the world and we have devoted our efforts to provide opportunities for his works to be known in the United States.” – René Buch
“La vida es sueño” tells the story of Prince Segismund of Poland, who is imprisoned at birth after his horoscope convinces his father that he will bring disaster to the country. After almost a lifetime in prison, Segismund is released to reign over the country, however, he turns rebellious and commits rape and murder. He is then drugged, re-imprisoned and told that the previous events were just a dream, which brings him to question whether life is reality or is just a dream. The play, published in 1637, is Calderón’s most famous work and considered an allegory about the human situation and the mystery of life and explores the conflict of free will and predestination.
Repertorio’s mission is intrinsically linked with Spain and the country’s rich theatrical heritage. Classical and contemporary plays from Spain have been an integral part of Repertorio’s offering to its audiences. At least one of Federico García Lorca’s plays has always been in repertory since the 1970’s. The Company has produced plays by Calderón, Tirso de Molina, Lope de Vega, Unamuno and García Lorca.
